Coming to Freckle Digital with a Business degree from QUT with a major in Advertising, I have a love for content creation. I'm always willing to chat to anyone who will listen about my hacks for making content creation a breeze!
Content is a massive part of what we do here at Freckle Digital, and I, for one, love it! However, anyone who does their own content knows how time consuming and challenging it can be, especially if like me, graphic design is not your forte. To help, I have scoured the internet to find a treasure trove of resources, both free and paid (on a budget, don’t worry), to elevate the content we produce. Here are my top picks…

Of course, I have to start with my content creation holy grail. By now you have surely heard of Canva, but I am constantly amazed by its capabilities. If you have no idea where to start, the templates are a great jumping off point. Just swap in your brand colours, images and logo and you’ve got yourself a great Instagram post or story.
The hidden gem of Canva is the background remover tool. Layer images over a different background or overlap products to make a visually appealing collage. The free version of Canva is perfectly fine but I would suggest opting for the paid subscription as there is a wider array of images and elements available at your fingertips. If you start anywhere with content, please let it be Canva!

Having video content is just about a necessity today so InShot is about to become your best friend. Much like Canva, you can download a free version but this will have a watermark, therefore the paid version more preferable. It is worth it, trust me. It is great at trimming your videos, piecing many clips together or adding intro/outro tiles (that you’ve made in Canva – see how they all work together). My most common use though, is the canvas resizing tool. You can turn a square video into one that is story size or any other ratio.
While your first thought for video editing might be iMovie (and yes, that is great for substantial videos that need some more precise work – there’s a bonus tip for you), it doesn’t allow you to easily resize videos. I use InShot on almost a daily basis so honestly, thank God for this app!

Turn your Instagram stories up a notch with Dazzle, an app that allows you to make animated videos in stories size. With easy to use templates, you don’t need to think too hard – just add your images and text. Download the videos and upload them as Instagram stories or piece a few together in InShot and make Instagram story ads (the way I personally prefer to use the app). It is definitely an easy way to make eye-catching stories.
Apple Photo App
Sure, there are plenty of photo editing apps out there and I like Lightroom as much as the next content creator, but there is a lot to be said for the stock standard Apple Photo app for editing images. Brighten, sharpen, increase the colour intensity and adjust the warmth in an app that you likely already have. After all, why complicate things if you don’t have to?

There are a range of content scheduling programs around and I’m not going to pretend that one is definitely better than another, but at Freckle, we use Hootsuite and I love it. Scheduling content is one of the best ways to take the stress out of posting. Unless it is reactive content, there is no reason you can’t plan and schedule a week’s worth of content at once (or even a month’s like we do!). Set aside some time when you can and schedule as much as possible. It helps you stay consistent and avoids the all too common, “argh, what am I going to post today?”
Some Bonus Freebies
WhatTheFont by My Fonts
Screenshot a block of text, upload it, and the program will tell you what font it is. Consistent branding literally could not be easier.
Most email marketing platforms don’t allow you to upload videos, instead requiring gifs. Enter: EzGif. Easily transfer files from mp4 to gif and back again. Also handy if you need to edit a gif – turn it into a video and pop it in to InShot.
Easily download videos from Instagram – perfect for reposting without the messy look of a reposting app. Just don’t forget to credit!
Invert Image Colours by Pine Tools
Ideal for black or white logos, invert colours so the logo can be used on various backgrounds. A white logo becomes black and vice versa.
If you have any other questions about content or just need someone else to do if for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Good luck with all of your future content endeavours.
